Title: New PC time - and yes, this time I'll order within 10 days ;)
Post by: Aerendur on 07 March, 2014, 08:29:50 AM
So as the topic says. It's about that time again. The itch to get a new pc is there again. This time however, I've moved to a bigger place and I have money to burn. So let's get cracking and sort this quickly. I'd like to start ordering this weekend unless there are things I cannot order from my wish list!  :o

Things to be done on the new rig:
1. Gaming + Capping/Streaming.
2. Programming.
3. Music, guitar input.
4. Video editing, for the caps I make.

Quick list of what I'm thinking about so far is:
CPU: Intel i7 4770K.
CPU Cooler: Corsair H105.
PSU: Seasonic 660w platinum.
SSD: Samsung 840PRO 256gb.

The on the fence ones are:
Mainboard: Most likely an Asus Z87 or X87 board
Memory: Unsure about brand atm, but 2 * 8gb 2133mhz (or higher?).

The silly rabbit in the list:
Graphics: GTX 750ti, EVGA or MSI 2gb OC version.
This card will be tested and used if I like it. If not I'll push it down to my old machine to give that a boost and buy a higher tier graphics card for the new rig!

The casing is gonna be a hard choice. I always like my pc to be non intrusive and very quiet. I've always leaned towards a Silverstone TJ07 Silver edition. But they are kinda expensive and most sites don't list them as available. So any input on that part?

Display: Another very hard choice, since I simply don't know enough. Problem is that I've been gaming on my iMac and that screen is lovely. So it has to compare to that. Samsung 9 series 27inch looks good but expensive. Perhaps a Dell or Asus 27 inch?

So let's hear it, any bad combinations in my setup so far? Anything worth considering before I search the web for the best place to buy these items? And especially, any input on the things I haven't found a prime target for?

Heya Kivik! Nice to see you around! And yes, this computer will be used both for testing and playing CU! :P

Seems like a weird setup with the tiny graphic card :o that card should be in a htpc.

The casing is gonna be a hard choice. I always like my pc to be non intrusive and very quiet.

My brother put together a computer for a friend of his, with a sleek and silent case. I've thrown him the thread URL and asked for input. We'll see when he looks away from his LoL streams...

For case, I would really reccommend Fractal Design Define R4 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811352020) or, if you need a bigger case, the big brother the Define R2 XL (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811352029) will be right up your alley. They aren't the cheapest cases, but they are silenced straight from the factory with foam on all sides, good cablerouting options, extra space behind the motherboard for just that reason, aswell as dustfilters on the fan holes by default. It's a very sleek, sexy case, but it's also a brilliant case module-wise, highly customizable.

The Define R4 is my case of choice for my next rig - It's quiet, it's sleek, and highly functional.

Since you're going to stream / cap, I would reccommend a nVidia card, I've heard good things about their ShadowPlay capturing tool, good performance on high settings etc. If having 3+ monitors is more of a priority, I'd go for an Radeon card. Also note that if you're using the newer version of Sony Vegas for rendering, they have support for GPU rendering with most cards, but best results are seen with nVidia cards from what I can see. (Source (http://www.sonycreativesoftware.com/vegaspro/gpuacceleration))

I agree with the choice of processor, as the K-series offer the absolutely best in overclock potential, aswell as base performance. I'm assuming you already have some serious HDD storage outside the SSD, so I'm not going to list that, just keep in mind you'll need a -lot- of space for Fraps cap. (I recently deleted around 775 GiB of fraps cap files.)

As an apropos; Use OBS (https://obsproject.com/) for streaming, not Xsplit. Xsplit hogs way more resources than it has to, and (imo) has a very clunky and somewhat bloated UI.

Good luck on your rig-building!

Great input. Thanks!

@bat, yeah I probably should just go for a real card straight away. So I'm looking into the differences between the 770, 780 and the 780ti! Prices kinda jump up a lot between them. So dunno.

@Dementuz. Thanks for your input, much appreciated. Shadowplay is actually the reason I was looking at the Nvidia cards. It does sound like the way to do the capping.

I indeed already have a lot of hdd storage. Will move over 3tb from old machine and have a NAS for more storage after editing. (another thing I might upgrade soon!!)

The fractal cases do look very nice indeed. I do wonder about their comment to only have the space for a slim 240 rad in the top. Top rad sounds ideal. But the H105 isn't slim I gather. Which would mean setting it up at the front. And then pull from bottom and out from top. Hmm.

Thanks for the tip on OBS, will surely check that out when I get the gear! :P

This is gonna be a fun adventure!  8)

Most decisions have been made! So what I'm looking at right now are:
i7 4770k
Inno3D GeForce GTX 770 iChill HerculeZ X3 Ultra 4096MB
Asus Maximus VI Hero
16GB corsair/Team Group ram (2 * 8, so I can go 32gb later on if needed/wanted)
H105 Corsair CPU cooler
Corsair Carbide 540 Case (don't need looks that much anymore since it won't be in the living room).
Samsung 840PRO 256gb

Display I'm still looking into, but first going for the rig itself.

Any mistakes in there? Let me know! I'm gonna be price hunting (are there any european sites that will gather all info and tell you where is cheapest?)

Testing the pc now! Just for DAOC ofc! :P Just a few short tests run, but it looks good so far.

Any programs you guys can recommend for a test?

So far:
Without overclock:
3.5ghz, idle 22c, load 28c.

With small overclock:
4.2ghz, idle 23c, load 29c.
